More Tips on a Safe Deposit Box

In our prior article, we looked at the common questions people have regarding the use of a safe deposit box. Here, we'll share some tips to make your safe deposit box work most effectively for you.

  • Before renting a box, read the security and operating procedures in your rental contract. Talk to the bank representative about access procedures and security devices. Make sure you are comfortable with the level of protection. Most banks also provide a special "viewing room" or booth outside of the vault that you can use to inspect your box's contents in private.

  • At home, be sure to keep your two safe deposit keys apart from each other and in safe places. Do not place a key with your house keys or car keys. Give your extra key to someone you trust. Be sure to notify the Bank if one of your keys is lost. Also, it is a very good idea to keep a written and photographic record of your box's contents at home in case any items are lost or you need to file a claim.

  • Inside the vault, be sure to accompany the bank's employee to the safe deposit vault and be sure no other clients are there with you. Always be aware of where your key is. Be sure that you don't leave the key in the box door as you view the contents of your box. Also, your box should never be out of your sight. Finally, be sure the box door is properly locked and that you have your key before you leave.

For just a few cents a day, you can rent a safe deposit box and have peace of mind.

  • Outside the vault, only open the safe deposit box when you are inside the viewing area and away from bank employees or other bank clients. Make sure you do not leave anything behind that provides clues to what is in the box.

  • Immediately report to the manager of the financial institution any items you suspect are missing from your box or if there are signs of unauthorized or forced entry.
